Take a minute and search for “How to Improve My Online Presence” on Google.
You’re going to receive thousands, if not millions, of results for that single phrase. It’s a question that businesses, organizations, and individuals have been asking for years, and one that continues to be just as relevant today as it was when I first wrote about it back in 2012.
The internet has certainly changed over the years. Social media has evolved, mobile devices have become a primary way people browse the web, search engines have become smarter, and now artificial intelligence is changing how people discover information, products, services, and businesses. Yet, despite all these changes, the fundamentals of building a successful online presence haven’t really changed all that much.
Whether you’re operating an online business, building a brand, representing an organization, or simply trying to establish your name online, the objective remains much the same. You want people to find you, recognize you, trust you, and ultimately benefit from what you have to offer.
Some key components to your online success are:
- Visibility: Have you targeted the correct audience? Can people actually find you through search engines, social media, and other online resources?
- Reliability: Are your visitors finding your website resourceful, trustworthy, and beneficial? Does your online presence give people confidence in what you have to offer?
- Current: Is your website current with the technologies, security practices, accessibility standards, and expectations of today’s visitors? Does it function properly on mobile devices?
- Social Networking: Are you taking advantage of social interactions and the opportunities available to connect with your audience? Social media isn’t simply about advertising. It’s about building relationships, engaging in conversations, and remaining connected.
- Visual Appearance: How is your brand or name being seen by others? Does your website, social media, and overall online identity present a consistent and professional appearance?
- Content: Are you regularly updating and maintaining your website content? Are you providing information that is relevant, helpful, and worth returning for?
There is such a thing as “too much” and “not enough”.
Some companies pride themselves on offering it all, and depending on their market, this can either contribute to their success or become part of their downfall. Having a presence on every social media platform, investing in every new technology, or trying to appeal to absolutely everyone doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be successful.
In fact, sometimes doing less, but doing it well, can be far more beneficial.
It’s important to understand your audience, where they’re spending their time, and what they’re actually looking for. A small local business may find considerably more value in maintaining an informative website, an accurate Google Business Profile, and an active Facebook page than trying to maintain a presence across a dozen different platforms.
The same can be said for the content you’re publishing. More content doesn’t always mean better content. Publishing information simply for the sake of remaining active isn’t nearly as beneficial as providing something meaningful, useful, or informative to the people you’re hoping to reach.
Is your website search engine optimized and using practical means to be found?
This question remains important, although the way people search for information has changed considerably. Traditional search engines like Google and Bing continue to play an important role, but people are also discovering businesses through social media, video platforms, online reviews, and increasingly through AI-powered search tools.
Good search engine optimization isn’t simply about filling your website with keywords. It’s about making your information understandable, accessible, relevant, and useful. It’s about ensuring your website is structured properly, performs well, and provides the information people are actually searching for.
Are you connecting with your visitors, and are they connecting with you?
This is perhaps one of the most important questions of them all.
You can have a beautifully designed website, thousands of social media followers, and an impressive amount of traffic, but what does any of that accomplish if your visitors aren’t finding what they need?
Are they able to contact you easily? Can they navigate your website without becoming frustrated? Are you responding to their questions, comments, or concerns? Are you providing them with a reason to return?
Your online presence should be more than simply having a website or a collection of social media accounts. It should be an extension of who you are, what you represent, and the value you’re hoping to provide to others.
Maybe you’re an individual or business without much of an online presence at all. That’s perfectly fine, too. Everyone has to start somewhere, and establishing an online identity doesn’t have to mean investing in everything at once. Start with what makes sense for your needs, your audience, and your industry, and build from there.
Technology will continue to change. New platforms will come and go, search engines will evolve, and the tools available to us will continue to improve. What works exceptionally well today might look entirely different a few years from now.
But the importance of being visible, reliable, current, approachable, and genuinely helpful isn’t going anywhere.
Your online presence isn’t simply about being found. It’s about what people discover when they find you.
